What To Do if Your Hotel Is Dirty and Unhygienic

What To Do If Your Hotel Is Dirty And Unhygienic

You've booked a holiday in a lovely looking hotel that you saw online. You've flown hundreds of miles to get there, and when you arrive, exhausted and expectant; you see what can only be described as a 'fleapit.' It's disappointing, and it's going to ruin your holiday if the place is dirty, damp, unhygienic or just plain awful. So what can you do about it?

If you booked a package holiday (a holiday made up of more than one component which was paid for as one 'package') you have the backing of the Package Travel Regulations, which mean that you could be entitled to compensation if the holiday isn't as you expected, or doesn't live up to the standards you would reasonably have expected it to.

Who is Responsible if I Have a Complaint?

The tour operator is liable under the law if there is a failure of the hotel to provide the services, facilities and accommodation that you've been led to expect. So, if you book the holiday through an agent, they will quite rightly tell you to take the complaint up with the tour operator. You'll have the details of the operator on your paperwork so keep hold of all the details.

Your first port of call is to the travel rep for your holiday. They have to make every effort to resolve your issues as soon as they are made aware of them, so if you check into your room and it's filthy, you need to tell them immediately. Most reps will give you a contact number - they want to sell you excursions after all - so use it. Meanwhile, if there are obvious signs that the room isn't clean - insects, mess, etc, take photographs. You might need these later!

What Am I Entitled To By Law?

The law states that all holiday accommodation must be safe, clean, and of a reasonable standard. So if you find yourself in a disgusting, dirty hotel, arrive to find a room full of cockroaches, and the kitchen hygiene gives you a dose of holiday tummy, you are entitled to compensation even if the holiday was a bargain and the accommodation was described as 'basic'. You're entitled to a certain level of accommodation even if you pay rock bottom prices.

Complain as soon as possible and ask the rep to complete an official report, and then make sure you have as much evidence of the issues you are complaining about as possible. Write to the tour operator within 28 days of returning home, giving them full details of the problem, what you want them to do about it, and giving them a deadline to respond. Include:

  • your invoice and confirmation number, ticket numbers and any other reference numbers
  • the date of your holiday
  • how much you paid
  • what the problems were and the effect they had on your holiday
  • details of any travel agent if you went through one - or the website you booked through
  • what you would like them to do - a refund or compensation for example
  • copies of any documents or any photographs that you took of the problems
  • statements from any witnesses.

Send the letter by recorded delivery and keep a copy.

The amount of compensation you can claim for a holiday that turns into a nightmare usually depends on how serious the breaches of contract were - for example if the lack of hygiene causes you or anyone in your party serious illness, ruining the holiday completely, you would be within your rights to claim a larger portion of the cost of the holiday plus any damages for loss of enjoyment - but if you were simply unhappy with your room, the compensation would be substantially less.

In some cases you can end up with compensation that's much more than you paid for the holiday - but as you would have to have had a really awful time, let's hope that's not necessary...

I have just stayed in Scarborough in a guest house with my 12 year old daughter. Whilst there my daughter had an accident on the bed and I couldn't find anyone to let them know. The beds were due to be changed that day. The next day we went down for breakfast and the owner humiliated me by shouting at me and the next day my daughter was petrified to go down to breakfast so I went alone to find the owner had added £100 to the bill for a replacement mattress. Is this right?

Stay at premier inn 29th feb in cumbria for a wedding for 1 nights stay, we had 1 hr for check in an also to get ready for wedding so we didnt notice the room, as my brother an girlfriend were also getting ready in our room as theres wasnt ready, we closed the curtains and left as it was going to be a long day, when we awoke early morning i opened the curtain to find that my partners was sleeping in blood splatter on the pillow, (drug addict blood) horrified i then looked at my pillow to find what could only be discribed as feacal matter over mine, my partner imediately run a bath to wash himself and when he pulled himself up using the bath rail his hand was covered in a black gungy substance which was vile, the ceiling in the room was covered in insects and what also looked like blood, the bin had not been emptyied (no our) stuff, i couldnt even take a shower due to the state of the bath. We decided to complain at recption and as soon as we got there we were refused breakfast thats another story which had nothing to do with us, we told front desk that we were there on a complaint over our room, front desk came to look at our room and was appalled by the state of the room an told us no-one should be subjected into staying in a room like this she couldnt believe it, she then proceeded to remove the pillow cases off our bed and told us she was going to write a report, i must add am in very poor health and must eat regular in order to take my many tablets, so being refused food is a major no, we left imediately am still shocked worried an frightened especially with the coronavirus, ave been unwell since i got home. Premier inn has not been in touch, ave had to do all the communicating, after 2wks of being back they decided to offer me my money for the room back as a goodwill guesture and told me they were still investigating. Havent heard from them since, tried ringing few weeks ago to no avail. What do i do now, i also have photographs.

I booked a hotel at In Town Suites in Bowling Green, Kentucky and they are absolutely disgusting. I see why their prices are so low. They DO NOT clean their rooms properly. There is black mold in the bathtub, on the ceiling and walls in the bathroom. As well as the kitchen. There is yellow crap running down the walls in the kitchen. Blood on the wall in the bathroom. The carpet is sticky and gross. Loose faucets, and the bedding does not even fit the bed. I have a queen and the bedding is for a king. The only reason I stayed is because I paid for a month while I was in the process of buying a house.

Having booked the same hotel for half board for May and September this year 2019, and to be told when we arrived that, we had to go to their sister hotel for our evening meal, when we were there we complained to the Tui Rep and it was noted. When we arrived home we then went down to the Tui office to say we didn't want to go back to that hotel for the September booking, we have been told we probably would lose our £500 deposit, is this right as this isn't what we booked for, I don't want to have to walk to another hotel for my evening meal. Can anyone please give me some advice.Thank you

Hello, Me and my friend are staying in a 5* hotel in Greece with full pension. Yesterday we took a lunchbox to go to the beach because it was far away from the hotel. Instead of a decent lunch we got moldy sandwiches. But not just a few spots, I mean FULL with mold. The hotel manager was really shocked when he saw it and he said that we would meet again this morning to find a solution. My friend is upstairs sleeping because she wasn’t too well yesterday. I’m waiting for him even if my stomach is not at it finest. I was wondering what could be a good compensation to ask. First of all we are going to ask back the money we had to spend for a lunch because theirs was disgusting. But besides that I don’t know what could be legit. We spend 1100 euros each for a week stay, but since I’ve never been in this situation I don’t want to make it to easy on them (if you could see the picture you’d throw up, really).

What a shambles! Firstly, after arriving at the hotel a payment of £21 was remaining, fair enough as this was outstanding from the breakfast we had added on late (£20) and the £1 was not taken from the initial booking so that they could verify me upon arrival. After this, she asked me for ID which was scanned, why though I will never know. Its 1 thing to check an ID to make sure its the same person, but then to scan it!! WHY ON EARTH! Secondly, after taking the remaining the deposit, they proceeded to tell me that there was no room in their "hotel" and that there was a problem, so we were having to move to their sister hotel which was a 25 minute walk away, this was an issue for me as I am not able to walk far distances. After informing the lady on reception on this, she told me that there was a £50 deposit required, via card only. I was not happy with this as this did not say this anywhere when booking. She then went on the phone and conveniently found a room for us in the original york "hotel" however required a £20 cash deposit, I said that this was not a problem however i wanted a receipt to prove that it had been paid. Going up to our room, the door took a fair push to open, sticky. There was 2 double beds in the room although there was only 2 of us staying there. They weren't exactly clean but they were OK. I went into what I could only believe was a en-suite. This was not the case, in there was only a wardrobe and a chest of draws which was only the housing, not fronts, not handles, no rails, hangers, hinges, nothing. The toilet was on the corridor, in the smallest of rooms. With only a toilet, an over flowing bin, 1 roll of toilet roll and the smallest of sinks which had a crack in it. The soap dispenser had no soap in and the hand dryer didn't work. The curtains in the room were only net, this was not ok as we looked onto the main street and it was light until late, this was difficult to sleep in. The room was like sleeping in a sauna. The windows didn't open very far even with the clasp off. When going down for breakfast the next morning we was told that there was no breakfast as the hotel didn't offer this service, I said there must be some mistake as we had paid for it when checking in. They then proceeded to tell me that there was a mistake. I showed them the receipt for the card transaction and they said that they were sorry and gave me a "voucher" and told me that the breakfast was at a hotel down the road. After arriving at the hotel down the road the room for breakfast was full, we got on with this as this must have been a popular hotel in the area. However, breakfast, if you can even call it that, was atrocious! The beans were cold, the eggs weren't cooked, the bacon looked some what fried lightly, still practically pink! The sausages were like cardboard. the hash brows were awful! The "Fresh" orange seemed diluted!! The yogurts weren't cold, there was no fruit and the bread was hard befo

Hello just booked hotel in Blackpool through Expedia for night to stay in July. However after no refund payment made noticed lots of negative reviews with photos showing the horror that is the hotel, now I am getting panic attacks as it was a non refundable payment of £68. I booked hotel for myself and teenager daughter. It is the Rose hotel and Spa. Please advise how to proceed with this booking.

Our Response:
If the booking was made on the basis of no refund, then there's probably not much you can do about this really. There is no cooling off period for travel bookings.

It is Emma again. We paid over £3500 for an all inclusive 4star resort and even upgraded to a premium villa only to find it has cockroaches and a number of other faults. They can't offer us another villa here or a flight home as it is peak season. All they are offering is a 5star alternative where we would have to forgo the kids club AND forgo the all inclusive (settling for half board instead) AND they are asking us to pay an extra £1000. It feels like we are being held to ransom here: put up with the cockroaches or forgo the extras you wanted and fork out an extra £1000. We'd struggle to pay the extra. Are we with our rights to demand that they cover the upgrade or part of it, or do we retain the right to sue them for compensation on our return?

Bel - Your Question:
I'm at a hotel in Gran Canarie ( Thomas Cook) and I just had a cockroach run up my leg when I went to use the loo! If there is one thing in life that I hate more than anything it's them! It's just the last straw of what I think of this holiday so far. It's day 3 and I'm suppose to stay here for two weeks:(! My husband paid about £3000 for the three of us. What can I do? The first bad sign was the broken window transport bus Thomas Cook got us on to get us to the hotel. It's a god damn joke. The food is cheap as they can go for an all inclusive and the bathroom has damp dirt and other stuff wrong with it i.e. Shower fixture falls off when you need to detach it. The bath has dents in it so rust is seeping out. The beds are very uncomfortable I have to put a duvet under my sheet. The pool doesn't have enough umbrellas for shade for everyone staying at the hotel. We had to move our loungers to find a palm tree like some of the other guests. It's 35 degrees and I have a 4 year old. The kids club is awful too, the state of the building is hourrendous. Please can you advise me on what to do and if it's possible to run a mile?

Our Response:
First of all talk to your holiday rep now. Ask them to move you because the accommodation has not met its description etc. They might not be able to move you, so your next hope is to claim some compensation on your return. To do this, make sure you make a note of everything that is not right, take as many photos as you can. Keep any receipts etc if you've had to eat out because the food is really unacceptable. If you really can't cope for the next week and half, you could try and find alternative accommodation and attempt to get a refund for this on your return (this is a very risky strategy if the holiday company refuses to compensate you though). If you're not happy with the response, contact ABTA or AITO and consider legal action.

Hihave just arrived back from Lanzarote family of 5 room has damp in it flaking walls we have all come back full of cold and very bad sore throats my husband had dr out 6 times with dizziness and couldnt walk stand up don't know if related or not.had to have 6 injections. going to see uk dr Monday. I want to know please if we can claim anything paid on credit card not with a company. Also how do I report this hotel it is in a bad state of repair Thanks ja

Our Response:
We're assuming you didn't use a holiday company and booked directly. You should have said something during your stay and at the very least, taken photos of the room etc. Make a note of everything you experienced and contact the hotel requesting compensation. If the hotel is listed on any booking websites orreview/comparison sites, make sure you inform them to alert other customers. It's unlikely your credit card company will be able to help but there's not harm in trying.

@Woody...im hoping to take the same action towards a dirty Blackpool hotel....Can you let me know how you got on please..
Aldo - 2-Nov-14 @ 12:46 PM
@woody. You did the right thing by actually complaining to the manager during your stay. Make notes of individual aspects of the room/food that you found dissatisfactory so that you can include them all in your complaint to the trader. Photos that you took will also help. Write to the hotel manager (send by recorded to delivery/keep a copy) stating that you would like to be compensated for your bad experience and reiterate that you were unhappy with the way your complaint was handled when you were there.
Include:
The dates you stayed there and how much you paid
List of all the things that were wrong
If there was a description in the advert, explain how your actual experience differed
How much you would like to be compensed

If you paid for your accommodation by credit card, it can sometimes be possible (and easier) to try and claim via your credit card company. By law, if the trader breaks they contract, the credit card company is jointly responsible (for holidays that cost more than £100 but less than £30,000). Even if you only paid the deposit by card and the remainder by cash you may still be covered. Try writing to them as well and explain that you have also written to the hotel manager.
If all that fails, then you could try court action but this may be lengthy, costly, difficult to prove...and there's always the chance that the hotel doesn't have the funds to pay any compensation awarded on top of the court costs.

Hi looking for a bit of advise. We booked a holiday that was in the paper for Blackpool. All information was incorrect with prices and this holiday worked out to be more. We paid £420 for 3 adults and 1 child aged 4 morning breakfast and evening meals. Checked in and could not see the rooms untill about 2hrs as they were not ready. When we could get in the rooms were disgusting they smelt of damp and the ceilings were black. The rooms had plastic ceiling which was black with dirt and the room was carpeted right through even the bathroom. The bed sheets had holes in them and there was dust all over the bed. The wall paper was all marked and hanging of the wall in some places and all carpets are very old. We paid for a room for myself husband and child and seperate for my mother they put us all in one room but was sorted in the end. We were shown 3 other rooms to see if we would be satisfied into changing but the rest of the rooms were in the same condition. After all this myself and my mother confronted the owner who asked us to step into his office like naughty school children and we explained that the hotel was not up to my standards and that I would like the money back to leave and go somewhere else. I was told that his accountant would not except this and we can leave but with out any money. We had no choice but to stay and we could not afford to loose that type of money. All food that was served was very basic and was not very nice to eat. You never known what you were going to have for tea as the staff could not tell you and there was no board to tell you what you could have and there was no choices either. Entertainment was awfull all drinks at the bar were flat. Fizzy juice and pints of lager. This has ruined my birthday/anniversary. This place is shocking and the owners are deluded.also there was a deposit of £100 paid.

@bevy1939. Ask to speak to the manager at the travel company you booked through and ask him/her to provide you with an assurance in writing that they have checked it out to ensure it is open and meets standards described in the brochure. If nothing else, it will force them to take it a bit more seriously.

I have booked a holiday for myself and son through A1 travel for 7th Aug to Turkey. When I recently looked on Tripadvisor people comments said the Club La Luna 4* was closed and you were being sent to the sister hotel Mira Luna 3* The reviews are terrible with regard to your health & safety, security, illness etc!Owner of both hotels near bankrupt, note on La Luna door saying hotel closed go to Mira Luna, my travel Co emailed saidLa Luna open last week which is clearly not yet still sending people there along with other companies.I asked to change hotel which has cost me more money to downgrade to a lower star hotel and now only half board, I had paid for all Inclusive, I could not afford the £350 to pay again for all inclusive but will cost me in the long run as now only half board.Reviews have now been taken off Tripadvisor, does that confirm the hotel is closed or so people do not know they are being sent to the sister hotel?Does my travel co not have a right to notify me of the closure or that they are sending you to a different hotel? When I spoke to them they said they had not heard anything and it was my choice to change hotel but I feel I did not have a choice as you would be mad to go out there knowing what was happening and to put myself and son at risk.I know you have to take reviews with a pinch of salt but every review is terrible and people looking to take legal action against travel co

Just a question. I am paranoid right now, to some this may seem silly. But we stayed at a hotel this weekend, only 1 night, from midnight until 7 am. As soon as we were finished getting ready to leave, we saw a cockroach on the bathroom wall. Our bags, and my purse were on a table. We shook out our clothes, inspected every last inch and shook our bags out, shook my purse out and looked through everything in it, outside of the hotel, never found anything. Also I had used my hairdryer to dry my hair that morning so I am pretty confident we did not take anything home with us.We kept everything outside when we got home, went through again, washed clothes and put the bags in a sealed garbage bag. BUT I a still paranoid that something may have come home. What are the chances after all that, or are we in the clear?
